Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

After working with Greek and Latin roots and building new vocabulary, my students realize we have a Bibliophile's Dilemma! My 7th and 8th grade reading students haven't the means to buy new books and discuss literature with their friends.

My students have been reading short informational texts and short fiction pieces all year long. However, they have had little to no experience reading full length non-fiction texts or age appropriate novels. As they approach high school, they will need to be able to read longer informational and entertaining works of writing. Our library has no full class sets of age appropriate novels and has no class sets of non-fiction writing apart from textbooks!

We will need full class sets of (30 copies) of three books, S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War, and Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma for Kids. With the two novels I would like to introduce my students to works of literature that are considered "classics" of their genre. My students have had little experience reading novels and many consider reading "boring". By introducing my students to novels that have captivated young readers for decades I hope to instill the idea that reading can apply to real life situations and that there are books written for us at all stages of life. The Omnivore's Dilemma is a work of non-fiction that tackles big issues of diet and where our food comes from. Students will sharpen their critical thinking skills and will need to apply their experience of recognizing bias, interpreting data, formulating opinions, etc. as they are looking into one of the big issues of today.

With a nearly 70% high school dropout rate in our neighborhood, we are in dire need of supporting our students' success. As my students approach high school and college reading classes, they are intimidated by reading long novels and non-fiction books because they have had little extended and in-depth reading experiences with longer works. Your support will provide me with materials necessary to help students read deeper and with more passion. Your support will change students' impressions of reading and will enable students to fall in love with fiction and informational text. Your support will move our students a step closer to becoming lifelong, successful critical thinkers.
