Mrs. Griffith Avery High School
Newland, NC Grades 9-12

I teach 10th grade World History, 12th grade Civics and Economics, and 9th grade Choices and Decisions. Our school is located in the rural Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. According to the State Report Card for the 2008-2009 (most recent) school year, our school made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Our average total Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 979 was well below the State average of 1016. Our school met its four-year cohort graduation target. There are no industries or railroads in our county. The major employers are the public school system and the local hospital. Most people in the area work seasonal jobs with the tourist businesses or grow shrubbery. We currently are experiencing double-digit unemployment.

1. The most important obstacle to me is that according to the State Report Card our school has 7.8 library/media books per student as compared to the State average of 16.78 library/media books per student. The average age of the books in our collection is year 1991 as compared to the State average of year 1993. 2. Our State educational system has faced drastic reductions in educational funding for this school year and next due to the economic downturn. All monies for textbooks have been eliminated for two years under Non-Recurring Reductions to Programs by the North Carolina General Assembly’s budget. 3. I would like for my students to have the opportunity to read new and exciting supplemental books.

We must increase the number of books available to our students because "Brilliant Books Bolster Brainpower." Books that address governmental, economic, and historical topics in a unique and interesting manner help me to teach and the students to understand the mandated Standard Course of Study. Textbooks are useful resources but they tend to be void of intriguing details. Ancillary books fill this void helping to spark the students' interest in various subjects. I have chosen "Lawn Boy" by Gary Paulsen because it provides quick lessons in economics. To quote some of the chapter heads, "Capital Growth Coupled with the Principles of Product Expansion" and "Force of Arms and Its Application to Business" show how this book about a teen boy and his lawnmower come to understand fundamental principles of economics. I chose "A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution" by Carol Berkin because it is a clear and concise rendition of the Founders successful efforts to draft the American Constitution amid conflict, compromises, and controversy.

Per the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Offer--We MUST encourage our students to read more in order to adequately prepare them for College. I am a firm believer that reading and vocabulary instruction will increase our students' ACT and SAT scores and help us to achieve our AYP goals under NCLB as well as to prepare students for post-secondary education at the Community Colleges and Universities. The ability to read and comprehend is vital in this 21st century age of ultra-communication, technology, and information. Literacy skills must be honed to perfection throughout both high school and college. Your donation will make it possible for my students to have new and interesting books for them to read--increasing their understanding of content and improving their reading abilities.
