Learning is something that occurs when students are active participants in the learning process. A document projector (specifically, an “Elmo”) will bring technology and the sharing of ideas to students’ fingertips. I am a fifth grade teacher at the newest addition to Aspire Public Schools family of charter schools. Our school is located in a high poverty area of California's East Bay Area. 100% of my fifth-graders are English Learners. This high-need community has been drastically under-served in the education realm for far too long and we are excited to bring better resources and educators to our families' neighborhood. While our school may be new, the building we call home is certainly not. Our staff devoted weeks of summer vacation to scraping gum off chairs, rubbing marker off old desks and moving new furniture up and down narrow stairs. While our school is now full of books, clean desks, committed educators and smiling students, there is a significant lack of technology. One technological resource my fifth grade classroom really needs is a document projector. A document projector would significantly improve student engagement. It would allow me to directly show books, papers and math manipulatives on the white board. The uses for a document projector in an elementary classroom are endless. In math, students can bring up their work and share with the class on a moment’s notice. What a wonderful tool to help students recognize that there are multiple ways to solve a problem. In Writing, it would encourage so many “teachable moments” by allowing me to highlight a well-written essay or a student’s insightful paragraph in front of the class. Innumerable editing and revising lessons would surely stem from this tool. I am most excited at the prospect of using a document projector to share reading texts. When I met my students last July, they were reading years below grade level. While we are making great gains, we still have a long way to go. A document projector would help me assist students read, understand, dissect and ENJOY texts that might normally be too challenging for them to read independently. Your help in getting an Elmo into our fifth grade classroom will bring lessons into a modern and hands-on learning environment. Thank you for showing these students who have been under-served for so many years that school is a positive place to learn and grow and that there are people throughout the country supporting our classroom and our dreams.
