I have been teaching first grade for 6 years now in a fast growing area of South Carolina. This year, my classroom is packed to the max with 23 eager 6 and 7 year olds. We spend each day together learning about reading, math, science, and social studies.

One of the biggest challenges I face is not having a collection of fiction and informational science books on the children's correct reading levels. Many of the resource books I share with them I have to read aloud. All is fine with that, but they are becoming readers themselves and want books about science to have in their own hands.

My students need a set of Environmental Awareness books and a set of Science books. The world around us is an ever-changing wonderment that I enjoy sharing with my students. I am in desperate need of this rich literature to share with the children so they not only take ownership of their learning but also expand their knowledge of the world that will one day be in their control.

I am reminded of some lyrics to a favorite song of mine: "Save the world. Make it a better place. For you and for me and the entire human race." By putting these environmental awareness and science books in the hands of my young first graders, you will be making a difference in the literacy lives they lead now, and also a difference in the future of our world.
