Being poor is hard. Economically, our county is one of the poorest in our state, with a 15% unemployment rate. When my students come to school, they feel like they have entered a whole new world…one that is safe, secure, and has many wonderful things to offer them. My students excited to learn, intelligent, work hard to understand the challenging fourth grade curriculum that I teach. Their minds move quickly, and immediate feedback is necessary to keep my class motivated. However, it is extremely hard to give immediate feedback with a classroom of 21 students. Classroom clickers would remedy our situation. The clickers and clicker program consists of a hand-held device (much like a TV remote) in which students vote in on their answers. After the teacher has allowed enough time, the answers will appear on the television screen or the SmartBoard. The students would be able to see instantly whether or not they had accomplished that day's objectives. This will help them to learn the material more efficiently, and to become more self-motivated. They will be practicing assessing themselves as they are learning, instead of days or weeks after the instruction has taken place. The clicker system keeps students engaged, and holds them accountable for their answers. In turn, students pay attention in class better. While our school district would love to provide this equipment to my classroom (and all of the others, as well!), there is not enough money in the budget to make the purchase. The clickers we need will make our curriculum more engaging and, more importantly, they will vastly improve the quality of instruction and assessment in our curriculum. If we only had the resources, even our students who have the biggest learning obstacles can become self-motivated and successful. This is a very expensive purchase, and I know I am asking a lot of you. However, you are the final, missing link to our incomplete curriculum chain. Without your support, the broken chain cannot fully support our students.
