Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

My students need books to research important people in American History to complete their "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" project.

I am the librarian for a small rural junior high that is located in the middle of a cornfield. Although we are somewhat close to a college town, the students' exposure to diversity is small.

The main objective of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” is for all eighth grade social studies students to use digital storytelling to create presentations to their peers that will introduce the students to diverse people who influenced American history. Working collaboratively in pairs, each set of students will select and research ten famous people that will include at least four females as well as at least three minority figures. The premise is that these ten famous people are the students’ dinner guests, and the students will develop questions for their guests. The students will use a variety of sources, both print and electronic, and cite these sources, demonstrating responsible use of information. Based on their research, students will introduce their guests and develop one thought-provoking question for each of their ten choices and again based on their findings will theorize what the person’s answer would be. These questions and answers will become the basis for their original and extremely creative scripts. Additionally, the students will use critical thinking skills to discover connections between their choices so that their scripts will flow smoothly.

The main challenge with this project is the age of the collective biographies in the library. The books are extremely old as shown in the picture. In fact, many, as the students tell me, literally stink!

You will make it possible to expand the students' education beyond the walls of our building through your donations. Through books students will be exposed to diversity.
