Journey of the Tragic Hero

For the past few years I’ve been teaching Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” in its classical format. However, as media becomes more and more prevalent, I’ve found that students have a much more difficult time connecting to the play. I found an incredibly useful tool in the Classical Comics series. These graphic novels take the original language of Shakespeare, and put images with it, to capture students’ interests, and help them to understand the action of the play. My goal is to obtain a class set (22 copies) of this amazing resource. I will be able to implement the play into my study of the hero in literature. Specifically, “Romeo and Juliet” is an example of two tragic heroes, whose flaws lead to their downfall. It also deals with the idea of fate, the nature of love and the problems of dealing with family conflict. All of these issues are relevant to my students. I believe that by using these books, I can make Shakespeare come alive to my students. As we live in a very rural district, it is difficult to get students interested in reading. Most students take a “why do I need to know this” attitude towards reading in general, and especially towards Shakespeare. With this resource, I believe I can make the play important to them.
