I have the most delightful group of 1st graders who are so eager to learn. My first graders are a very diverse group of learners at a Title I school. The book selection in our library is very limited.

I began using math literature to accompany my math lessons this year and it has been a huge hit. I can hardly believe the popularity of these books. My students are always asking to borrow the books after I read them and they even want to take them home. I have even placed the books with manipulatives for cooperative learning and they love to model the teacher. This has been very exciting to watch their level of enthusiasm. Help us! Our school library has very limited math titles. I want to expand this idea by pairing a few books on the same topic with manipulatives for at home reinforcement.

My students need additional math literature so that I can allow them to take these books home for extra practice. The literature and manipulatives will be assembled into take home bags with detailed activities so that the parents can continue the reinforcement at home.

Children love to be teachers and model what the teachers do. These math bags will give my students the opportunity to be the teacher at home, sharing their knowledge with their families. Allowing a student the chance to verbalize and teach someone else creates meaningful learning. As the ancient Chinese proverb goes, tell me, I will forget, show me, I may remember, involve me, I will remember. Help me give my students a chance to be involved.
