My students need a class set of 24 hands-free whisper phones to improve reading comprehension.

"I'm a fourth grade inclusion teacher at a small elementary school in North Carolina. My class has twenty students, 10 boys and 10 girls. Many of my students are from military families and come from all over the country. In my classroom, I currently have six students with learning, hearing, and speech disabilities, along with students on or above grade level.

During independent reading time I have observed several of my students reading aloud. I thought nothing of it and even encouraged the practice. However, the noise level in the classroom can get somewhat distracting at times and can interfere with other activities occurring in the classroom. So, as I looked around my classroom today, I reflected on what I could do to maximize reading and provide my inclusion classroom with a flexible reading environment. Then, I remembered reading an article on the amazing power of the whisper phone. So, after during some additional research, I discovered that the whisper phone had some encouraging and exciting possibilities for my students!

My class greatly needs a set of hands-free whisper phones to improve reading comprehension and fluency. The whisper phones amplify the whispered voice, which allows students to read quietly and hear with clarity. The whisper phones will my students to hear phonemes more clearly as they read and help processing and retaining their reading material. Not to mention, the whisper phones will help my students be more engaged in reading by providing a less distracting atmosphere. Not only can the whisper phones be used for independent or guided reading. I plan to use the phones during Writers Workshop. I find that my students do so much better editing their papers, when they can listen aloud to what they wrote. What better way to hear…than with a whisper phone!
