I teach High School Mathematics in a rural, low income district. One of the primary industries is tourism. Whitewater rafting is one draw to our area. Many of the students are involved in various aspects of whitewater rafting. In order to engage students in Pre-Calculus, many of the concepts taught in the course can be applied to river flow and velocity. We are going to obtain certain data from the river in order to cover the following topics: piecewise functions, exponential functions, the mean value theorem, trigonometric functions and their graphs, vectors and matrices. These aspects of math and their river applications have meaningful and local context for real world learning, while at the same time increasing excitement in upper level mathematics. In order for this to be successful, we are in need of two handheld GPS systems and a waterproof camera. Your donation will make it possible for our students to apply their mathematical skills outside the classroom as well as increasing their awareness of our fragile environment.
