I teach Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 to eighth grade students at a public charter school in a high-need community. Through the schools struggle to reach Adequate Yearly Progress, these students had seven different math teachers last year. Nonetheless, the students are proud of their resilience and want to excel.

"Graphing in the Blind" is what my eighth graders are doing! Graphing calculators would certainly bring life to the concept of linearity, especially since my eighth graders are fascinated by the notion that linearity is everywhere. We are studying linear equations and inequalities. The students struggle with visualizing constant rates on change. I allowed them to pass around my calculator to see what happened when they changed the slope. This manipulative was exactly what they needed to connect conceptually. Our school cannot afford calculators, so I told the students we would propose a project on this website. As a class, we will monitor the website to check our progress. The students eagerly await calculators as well as the ability to move one step closer to the technology of the 21st century.

In order to adequately prepare for high school, my students need exposure to the latest technology - graphing calculators. These students are disadvantaged socio-economically, academically and technologically. Giving them technology to support their academic growth helps to mitigate these disadvantages on many levels.
