My Students

Reading and writing your numbers through 30. Learning to add and subtract. Using coins to shop and make sales... All in a day's work for the five and six-year-Olds in my class, but right now that work is done with homemade or nonexistent materials.

I teach in a high need, low-income school.

Responsible for reading, writing, social studies, art, and of course, math, I cringe every time my students break into math centers because our room sorely lacks the quality and concrete resources they need to solidify the concepts I teach them on a daily basis. My ESL students are brilliant and enthusiastic mathematicians and problem solvers and deserving of the materials that their higher income peers use each and every school day.

My Project

My students need these materials for our daily math centers, during which we practice the Kindergarten standards necessary to prepare for the first grade. Day in and day out, my students practice number stories (addition and subtraction), using pennies and nickels, and correctly writing their numbers with my homemade tools. Paper price tags taped on to items around the classroom advertise stickers for 6 cents, a marker for 8 cents, and a stuffed zebra for 11 cents. Ziploc bags are filled with green paint so that teen numbers can be etched, erased and etched again. Paper rips, plastic tears and paint leaks, but still my students practice and learn. The materials we have do not keep us from learning, but they do slow us down. No Kindergartener should be slowed down from learning, and with new math materials my students will jump onto the fast lane, speeding into the first grade.
