My Students

My K-2 students are eager to learn and quick to answer library lesson questions: however, calling on only one or two students at a time is not an effective way for me to determine whether or not all of my students are actually engaged in the learning.

My school is a Title I elementary school in a rural county in South Carolina.

Over 65% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. My K-2 students visit the media center each week for a twenty-minute lesson followed by book check out time. My students are excited about learning how to use the library's online catalog to find books, how books are arranged on the shelves, and how to choose "just right" books for themselves. I believe that learning how to use the library to locate books and information is a skill that will benefit my students for the rest of their lives.

My Project

Using magic boards to record their answers to my library lesson questions all of my students will simultaneously demonstrate their understanding of lesson skills and concepts as they record their answers to questions and hold the magic boards up for me to see. Instead of calling on individual students for answers to questions, I can simply say, "Show me your answers." The use of Magic Boards will allow me to hold all of my students accountable for learning as I create a dynamic library classroom environment where all students are listening and actively responding to questions. The students will use the magic boards to quickly write their answers to questions, hold them up for me to check, and then wipe the answer away as they await the next question.

Your donation to my project will provide an opportunity for all of my students to demonstrate their understanding of library skills and concepts as they become effective users of information and ideas.
