Young Adult Literature for Rural Alaskan Eskimo Students

My students need 21 high interest and rich young-adult literature books.

Ms. Lindsey Togiak School
Togiak, AK Grades 9-12

Camai! I teach middle school and high school (6th to 12th) language arts in a small Alaskan Yup'ik (pronounced you-pick ) Eskimo village on Bristol Bay. My school is a Title 1 school and every child receives a free school lunch through the school lunch program. Poverty is high in this small village of less than 1,000 people. Every student in the school, except for teachers' children, are descendants of Yup'ik Eskimos. (Camai (pronounced jah-my) = Welcome in Yup'ik

My students are unique in that not only can many speak Yup'ik with their highly respected elders, drive 4-wheelers (also known as ATVs) or snow machines to school, but many have never even been to the largest city in Alaska: Anchorage. Daily, students face challenges regarding reading due to the lack of environmental print--no billboards here--and by being descendants of a culture that didn't begin to write until Russians came onto the scene to create their written language. Many of my students are not fluent in English nor are they fluent in Yup'ik, which puts them in a unique, but challenging position. Research has shown it is difficult for students to become fluent in English if students are not fluent in their home language. Unfortunately for many students, their home language is a type of Pidgin English that has evolved in Bush Alaska. Guided reading instruction across disciplines during school hours can only do so much; my kids need intriguing books to read at home, too, to keep them motivated to read but to also keep them curious in reading and words.

By beginning a classroom library of current young-adult literature, our students will not only be able to take books home that they find interesting, but these books will also be addressing situations teenagers of any culture, background, country, or race face: friendships, loss of loved ones, sexuality, right vs. wrong, and pop culture--something they see so often beamed in onto their TVs from satellites that scatter our village in an attempt to stay connected to the "outside" or "real world" but few have actually encountered. These books will also help our students find more comfort in the metropolitan world as many head into post-secondary education, work force, or even vacation.

Because so many Native Americans and Alaska Natives cannot find success in metropolitans after living in rural, isolated areas for the majority of their lives and often return to villages only to find that they no longer fit in there as well, we as educators owe it to them to find as many ways as possible to help them build their background knowledge and prepare them for what life will be like once the protection of mountain ranges and desolate tundra has been erased. These young adults are the future for this village of a dying culture and making sure they are successful will ensure that they will be able to communicate their thoughts to defend their personal opinions against whatever situation may arise in their lifetime as well as protecting the rights of their culture from a changing world. Please assist me in assisting my wonderful students! They so desperately need every bit of help they can!
