Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a PreK-5, Title I school with a primarily ELL population. Likewise, the local community is also largely Hispanic. Our parents are hardworking, dedicated, and enthusiastic, but cultural and language differences often leave us both feeling frustrated and confused. We want to make our families feel at home and to facilitate their taking an active role in their child's education at school. Unfortunately, the recent economic downturn has left us more dependent on creativity and the kindness of others to meet our students' and our families' needs.

My team of school colleagues are working hard to bridge this gap by creating a plethora of "open-door" events in which the community can come and learn with our students; and in turn, see how our students are learning. One event we are planning is a teacher-student-parent soccer game. We have a large, open field, and have been lucky enough to receive a grant that paid for leveling the field, and the purchase of soccer goals. In exchange for use of the field, a local soccer team has graciously agreed to line, and maintain the field for us. Now, we only need the funds to purchase good soccer balls.

We know that we could purchase cheaper soccer balls, but we would like 8 really tough, high quality ones that will last a long time. Because the weather may sometimes prevent our practicing outside, we would also like 2 high-quality, indoor soccer balls so that we may play inside as well. We are excited because a large number of our students have already shown a lot of talent and affinity for playing soccer on the playground. Many of our parents already play organized soccer locally on teams. We believe that this will be a wonderful way to welcome our parents, and to build up a parent-student-school relationship.

With your generous donation of soccer balls, and a bag in which to carry them, we hope to really increase parent and community involvement at our school. Lack of understanding due to language and cultural barriers can make parents hesitant to participate, but with your kindness, we will facilitate a means of communication that requires no words. Your thoughtful endowment will hopefully generate a bond between school and family, and will definitely mean exercise and enjoyment for many, many people for years to come! With your belief in our endeavors, our students may have a more level playing field in the real world, and a greater chance for success in the future. A winning team of parents, students, and teachers is our goal!!!
