My Students

Imagine trying to get dressed while being bounced on a trampoline. The task that usually happens easily and with out much thought would becomes a major challenge. Students with sensory processing disorders can not function in the same way typical students do and need help facing daily challenges.

The students in my class are three to four years old and have a wide range of severely handicapping disabilities.

They attend a five day a week preschool program. All of the students in my class have difficulties processing information from their senses and rely on a bombardment of both sensory and vestibular stimulation in order to have success in the classroom. They are a happy bunch, hard working bunch of boys. The slow rate of progress can be frustrating but also very rewarding when a new skill is mastered. Independent mobility is one of the big goals of our classroom. Students are either learning to walk or taking the next step and learning to navigate around the classroom while walking. Communication is another big goal for our students. Some students are just beginning to understand that their actions influence their environment, while others are experimenting with speech, sign language, and other communication devices. In our classroom the ability to learn is a gift.

My Project

Movement is one of the most reliable and efficient ways to help students with sensory processing issues get their brains organized and working properly. Because most of the students in my class are not yet capable of running or jumping with out assistance, we rely on equipment like swings, rockers, scooter boards, and trampolines. For example the monkey swing we requested allows our children to swing and hang giving both vestibular input as well as deep pressure to their joints. This makes them more aware of the muscles in their bodies, making it possible to work on walking, reaching and all those wonderful skills typical children their age take for granted. Some of our students need to swing but do not have the strength to do so independently. The Cairo swing is made so that an adult and child can swing safely and comfortable together. We also requested large scooters. They are a wonderful way to work on strengthening core muscles while moving and playing.

The materials requested are a huge piece in helping the students in my class succeed.

The older they get the harder it will be for their bodies to learn and change. This is a critical year for these children to gain essential skills in their journey towards independence. The equipment these children require is expensive as well as expansive, but if the job gets done right these children have the opportunity to be contributors to their world and not just sit on the side lines.
