Experiencing Life Through the Pages of Books

My students need books that I hope will change the way they see the world.

I am very blessed to be able to teach a group of exceptional 7th grade language arts students. These kids are in a very special place in their lives where they are still deciding what kind of people they want to be when they grow up. I believe that books are a wonderful way for them to see whether they want to be heroes, sidekicks, minor characters, or villains in their own lives.

I have heard it said, “that it is important to be cautious, because enthusiasm is contagious.” I have definitely seen this to be true in my own classroom. Every time I read an adolescent literature novel that I enjoy, I tell my students all about it, and before long they are all trying to read the same book. I am constantly recommending Harry Potter to my students, and when many of them finally caved and read the first book, they ran into class telling me how they couldn’t put it down. When I read The Hunger Games, I gushed over how incredible a book it was, and the last time I checked, there were at least 18 kids waiting to get our copy of it from the school library.

I am an avid reader who believes it is such an essential part to a happy life to read books that inspire and amaze. As I watch my students reading many of my favorite books for the first time, I am reminded of the first books I read that led me down the path of a book lover. It is my goal in life to create this same love of reading in all of my exceptional students, and so far, I have not been disappointed.

My ambition is to fill our classroom with such incredible novels that my students cannot help but become lifelong readers. With the help of donations and my own spending, I have begun to create this kind of library. I still need help, however, to put more of the books my students love so much in our classroom library. Through donations, I hope that my students will have access to many of the books they are unable to get in our school library, either because they are not there, or because the wait list for these books are too long.
