In a diverse, urban school with students who have interest and desire (and talent) in music and the arts, there is a great need for an outlet for artistic expression. In an elective class that has 90 students enrolled in 4 sections, my students will have the opportunity to explore creating and recording music digitally.
This is a new elective which requires start-up equipment to get us up and running. We have the expertise and knowledge of hardware and software, and now we need the gear. The start-up equipment will last for years and impact more than just the initial enrollment of 90 students.
In addition, the lessons they will learn in this class are applicable to academic studies: practice, multiple drafts, collaboration, giving feedback and teamwork. Students will be doing a considerable amount of writing, as well.
They will learn how to use hardware and software to make original recordings of their music and vocals. They will ultimately record a class CD, complete with artwork and photography along with an accompanying website.
We need basic recording and music production equipment including five headphone sets and an Mbox Mini recording Package for an elective class in which they will create a CD of music, vocals, poetry, and artwork. The equipment in this proposal includes the industry standard Pro Tools recording software, which will give them real, valuable skills should they choose to pursue music engineering and recording, in addition to them being able to express themselves artistically.
Many of my students have songs and tunes in their heads and in their hearts. Your support will help us get those songs onto keyboards, in microphones, and blasting out of speakers! It is a great chance to keep creativity and artistic expression in schools.
