Negative Space Is Positive

My students need hard rubber rollers, print blocks, lino cutters, printing ink, and printing paper.

Our school is a Title I, Standards Based alternative school of choice, located in a rural area of high poverty. We serve grades 6 – 12. My classroom is composed of grades 8 - 12 in a multi-age, multi-grade setting. I teach Fine Arts and Community. The students in my classes learn about Art, Music and Drama. We plan our projects considering how our work can make a difference in our self, school, homes and community. In fact, our school's mission statement says it all, “Graduating productive citizens in a standards-based environment by connecting teaching and learning for the head, hands and heart”. This project proposal consists of three parts: community service to the school; learning new skills in Art with self expression; and the students learning about the process of printmaking. The community service aspect involves creating note cards and calendars for marketing in order to create a fund for future art supplies, field trips to study Fine Arts, and funds to be used for ordering videos, and books for future research. Students will be studying the use of “negative space” in images, how to use and care for their tools, how to carve the reverse image of their design, how to use and mix inks to add another element to their images, how different papers affect their image, how to ink their plates correctly, how to critique their art and that of the other students, and how to use sharp tools safely. Students will create Images of Alaskan flora and fauna. In the process, students will be studying the environment in which they live. The students are required to produce 4 thumbnail sketches of planned ideas, choosing 1 or 2 for further exploration. The expected outcome and impact of this experience upon the students is that they learn to take ownership and pride in their work and self. Students will learn how to begin a project and market the results. They are contributing a service to the school community and making a positive contribution to society. The obstacle I am facing is the lack of supplies. This is the first year our school has been funded for an Art teacher position. Unfortunately, there is no room in the school’s budget for supplies. I have been determined to use as much recycled material as possible, but nothing compares to proper tools and surfaces for safety and success. Our students often require assistance for personal care supplies, warm clothing, free breakfasts, and having someone just to care about them and recognize their worth as humans. I believe this is an opportunity to share care for our students by contributing the following supplies to make this project successful: Soft-kut rubber blocks, linoleum block carving tools, a variety of paper for printing, brayers, and a variety of inks.
