I teach First Grade at a Math Science Magnet school that works with students from all over the city. My students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and experiences. My school has a high rate of low income students, but we don't receive additional funding to provide real life experiences.

Our school has become dedicated to providing inquiry based science lessons that let students explore science on a more independent level. We lack the materials and funds to purchase the materials we need. The school system has not had the funds to purchase the materials and our PTA is almost nonexistent. My students have started a unit on rocks and soil and have become extremely interested on the different types of rocks. They have started bringing in rocks from home to share with the class. I would like to keep this excitement for Earth Science alive with the materials for this project.

The kit I would like to purchase is a complete rock collection that contains rocks my students have never seen before. They are all labeled with information about each rock. The magnifying lenses will help my students take a closer look at the rocks and gain a better understanding of each rock. They will be able to see how the rocks are classified as well as what characteristics make them similar to other rocks. I feel that this will engage my students into forming a love for Earth Science and maybe even encourage them to start a rock collection of their own.

Science is such an important part of our education that is frequently overlooked. With your help, I can help students gain a love for science, an inquisitive mind, and a desire to learn more about our environment.
