A Reading Loft For Young Minds

My students need a reading loft.

Ms. Lee PS 251 Paerdegat
Brooklyn, NY Grades PreK-2

I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher in New York. My students have learned the joy of reading and have learned to appreciate the information and knowledge gained from reading. They may be young, but they are ready to learn. Reading and literacy is becoming an integral part of education, where it is most often the focus of workshops and children's daily lives. To help maintain interest for reading and literature, I would love to have a loft created in my classroom. This coming year I want to create a reading nook for my pre-kindergarten classroom. I will be adding cushions and a canopy to a small corner my classroom. Unfortunately, as is true for many early childhood classrooms, my classroom is small for what I want to create. By having a loft put into my classroom, I would be able to create a place where my students could have a quiet area to read, as well as room below for a pretend or block area. I believe that this reading loft would help my students develop a greater interest and desire to read and be interested in the printed words. I want my students to come into school with the desire to learn and eager to come to school. One way to accomplish this goal is to have a warm and inviting classroom. The reading loft will serve multiple purposes in my room, as a place to read and learn, to serve as an extension of a small classroom and a place to post student's artwork. Your help will make reading so much more enjoyable. They have already learned to love to read, now they will have an area that is made just for cuddling up with a book.
