Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For many of my students reading is sounding out words, not diving into the world of imagination and fantasy. My students need experiences with books that matter, books that connect to their lives. They need to learn to love to read, to be able to escape into the world of fantasy.

My students live in a low income neighborhood in CA.

We are a diverse group with many cultures represented with in the classroom walls. Many students are on free and reduced lunches. However even with all that is against them they are eager to come to school and learn. Our school is one of the older sites in town but it is beautifully taken care of. Each and every student is proud of the school.

My Project

With these books students will be taken away from the world of nonsense words and sounding out letters and instead transformed into the world of fantasy where princes and princesses reside. They will read stories about people like them, stories that match their lifestyles and cultures. These stories will help students to develop a true passion for reading. Instead of seeing reading as a chore that often happens with the box programs, students when given the opportunity to read real literature and meaningful stories will begin to be lifelong readers. We cannot expect students to read at home if we do not encourage a love of reading in the classroom. We need to introduce that love at a young age.

These donations will make a huge impact on my students lives.

By giving the students an opportunity to read books that matter, that they can relate to, students will develop into excited passionate readers. By contributing to this project you are helping to create a love of reading into a first graders heart.
