My Students

I teach mathematics to New York disadvantaged 17-21 year olds who have returned to school to prepare for their GED examination.

Many of my students have difficulties focusing due to emotional disorders as well as drug and alcohol issues.

The majority of my students have struggled in school most of their lives and are not motivated to learn by traditional "chalk and talk" methods.

My Project

I'm very excited about this extraordinary opportunity for my students. I have wanted a video camera for some time and thanks to the generosity of a donor in providing an Almost Home offer, my students will be able to make “man on the street” and current event podcasts, take oral histories of family and community members and create our school yearbook. As of this week, beekeeping is legal in New York and we would like to record a report on beekeeping practices right here in town. In fact, the community garden I participate in has been offered a hive, my students would like to record the process of starting out with honeybees from beginning to end. Students will prepare questions and interview everyone involved, even the honeybees if they are willing to make a comment on camera. They’ll edit their story and videos and make transcripts of their work available for download with the podcasts just like real video journalists. I got the idea when I saw that some students from the year before I started here made a slide show and put it on YouTube. I thought it would be fantastic for our digital natives to make a yearbook that wasn’t only on paper, but available to view by friends and family all over the world. get in on the ground floor of this once-in-a-lifetime deal and you won't be sorry!
