Defeating Teenage Hypertension

My students need 7 blood pressure cuffs, 7 stethoscopes and 1 teaching stethoscope.

I teach 9th grade health in a rural high school. A recent article named our area of the state as the un-healthiest in the nation.

The problem that I am seeing in my classroom is that my students are mostly between 14-16 and still do not fully understand the dangers of obesity and obesity related lifestyle diseases. I try to teach my students to think more critically about their actions and what they should be on the lookout for. One of these is blood pressure. But the problem is that I only have 1 blood pressure cuff to share between 30 students. This makes for obvious problems when we try to do any activity involving blood pressure. Recently this one cuff sprung a leak and now barely hold air long enough to get a accurate reading.

My hope for a solution will come with the purchase of new blood pressure cuffs. This will allow for us to be able to have classroom sessions where students can learn more about what blood pressure is and how it can be monitored using these supplies. Expanded activities could be conducted to show how or bodies react to different situations. An example of this would be stress. As these students get older and go on to college they will be put under rather large amounts of stress which is unhealthy. By helping them to see the effect of this I can hopefully help my students to find techniques that will help lower their stress levels.

It is disheartening to realize that you live in the unhealthiest areas in the nation. It seems to me that there are only 2 options to remedy this. One would be to move to a healthier area. The second would be to try and make a difference. I choose the later. I want to make a difference in the futures of my students. I want them to be the generation that can turn the negative stereotypes about of area around. I want to empower them with the knowledge and skills to be healthier and to live longer lives.
