I have the privilege of teaching first grade at a high-needs urban school. Over 80% of our students are high-poverty and 50% speak a language other than English at home. Our students come from over 20 countries, and in my room there are at least nine different home languages spoken.

Children in poverty begin school with a 2-3 year language delay when compared more affluent students. This is due to the fact that children in poverty have heard 8 million fewer words spoken at home than children from affluent homes. They need to hear stories and poems in English, as much as possible. This helps them gain the language they need to grow socially and academically.

We need eight individual CD players and books on CD, including Brown Bear & Friends, Cat in the Hat, Diary of a Spider and more. With these books on CD and players, at least a third of my students can have the benefit of "one-on-one" reading in my classroom. This also allows them to be independent during personal choice quiet reading. It will also help increase their language growth.

When a first grader can listen to a book for 10-15, it helps them develop stamina for reading and focus for the task at hand. Your help will prepare them for a lifetime as strong, confident readers and learners.
