Give Us Words, and We'll Have Wings to Soar (Part 3)

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am asking for 25 copies of Sadler-Oxford’s Vocabulary Workshop Level D -- a very effective workbook, which can help my high-school students develop a college-ready vocabulary. My ambition is to give each student his or her own workbook to write in and keep forever, and I am requesting three class sets of forty to fifty books, so this proposal is divided into six parts to make it easier to fund (and this is Part 3). Believe it or not, our school district does not have materials to support direct instruction in vocabulary. When I say “we just don’t have the words to thank you,” that could really be true. These kids really do not have the words that will help them be successful readers, writers, and thinkers -- much less get them into college. Unless you help us, odds are they might not! The workbooks I am requesting are uniquely interesting and accessible for high school students. The material is at grade level (not “dumbed down” for impoverished students), and the anecdotes and articles that support the vocabulary are of interest to kids in this age group. My high-school students are highly motivated kids living in a Los Angeles barrio. Every child at our school now qualifies to receive free meals, and the whole campus receives Title One funding (meaning, the community as a whole is really broke). The parents of our students absolutely cannot and will not provide any classroom “extras,” and sometimes not even the “necessities.” Give my students words, and you will give them wings to soar. Without your help, this project absolutely will not happen. Thank you for helping these wonderful young people achieve academic success.
