During our first fifteen minutes of class, we travel everywhere from cities and neighborhoods like ours to Narnia and beyond. The students at this small charter school are considered at-risk -- they are part of a high-need, low-income community. When given the chance, they attempt to explore the world through books.

Until last year, our school fostered a culture of reading by requiring that everyone in the building, from the students to the office clerks, spend the first fifteen minutes of the day reading. This was followed by a fifteen minute discussion of the books we were reading and whether or not we were planning to continue. However, with the school's new focus on data-driven instruction, our administration decided to end school-wide reading, slash the budget to purchase new books, and limit independent reading time to only fifteen minutes during English/Humanities classes. The students have finally put their collective feet down: they want books!

Their demand for books has resulted in a three-part reading project that involves each student selecting three books to read in the next three months. They agreed to select one book to read in each of the following genres: realistic African-American fiction, non-fiction, and science fiction/fantasy. At the completion of each month, students will create displays throughout the school of the characters, communities, and issues they explored in the books they've read. Their goal is to not only add material to their student portfolios, but also to bring back a culture of reading to our school.

These students are in dire need of new reading material. Because of the economic crisis in their community as well as the budget cuts within our school, they are running out of options. Your help will ensure that the students are able to obtain reading materials and help bring back a culture of reading to our school.
