I am a 5th grade teacher at a Title I school. 99% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our student body is composed of African American and Latino students. They live in a community plagued with gang violence, drug abuse, and unemployment. However, my students come to school daily - ready to learn and committed to going to college!

My students are working hard to grow 2 years in reading! As a class, we decided that growing 1 year wasn't enough to combat the achievement gap. Therefore, all of my 27 students have been working hard to improve their personal reading growth level. To make sure students are moving up, scholars and I meet daily in leveled guided reading groups and literature circles. We currently need more leveled books that inspire and motivate students to read! We have a class average growth of 1.5 years. We have 5 months to go- and I know we can achieve our goal!

We need BOOKS! In a class survey, students asked for the following books to be added to the guided reading library: Artemis Fowl, Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler’s Shadow, Hoot, The Voice that Challenged a Nation: Marian Anderson and the Struggle for Equal Rights, and After Tupac and D Foster. It is my hope that by adding these high interest books to our leveled library, it will continue to motivate and move my students to higher reading ability and appreciation.
