At our school, we are trying to use technology to create relevant, project based learning in the library media center. I am the library-media teacher in a suburban middle school in Utah. I teach students in grades 7-9, and I typically see between 200-400 students in the library every week. Many students in our school are college bound, and our school has a rigorous academic curriculum.

I try to help students create projects that will interest them and be relevant. A life-long learning skill that would help students now and in the future would be to learn how to assemble an online portfolio. At this time, no one in our school creates this type of project, but if students learned this skill, they could use it to display work for student led parent-teacher conferences and for end of year evaluations in classes. They could also use this skill in high school for work, college, and scholarship applications. Creating an online portfolio would be impossible without some quality scanners.

I try to integrate and use new and different types of technology in the library-media center. Students could use the HP flatbed scanners to digitize and include examples of work such as artwork, musical compositions, handwritten work, maps and charts, and digital collections in student portfolios. They could also use the scanners to convert paper documents into electronic documents for easier sharing through PowerPoint and other types of presentations which could be included in the portfolios. Students could scan photographs from books in the library for science and social studies projects, maps for world geography projects, photographs from home for Language Arts autobiography projects, and primary source materials for U.S. and Utah history classes. These digital artifacts could be part of projects included in the portfolios. Because classes in our school are typically 30-35 students, I am requesting two scanners to help digitize documents more rapidly for students.
