My school has the highest poverty rate in my county at 76%. I am a Reading Specialist and Instructional Coach for my school and work with students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Many of my students are English Language Learners and struggle with reading and writing.

Due to economic hardships my students have limited access to books in the home, no pre-school exposure, and therefore come to school significantly behind in all areas of language and writing acquisition. Our school funding was cut by 60% in this year's budget. For these children that means nothing extra since all monies go to general operating expenses. The challenge to me is providing meaningful hands-on activities that develop a well rounded student. One such way of doing that is creating books with my students that are cross curricular and allow them to express their creativity while building their authorship skills.

With varied styles and colors of paper my students can make their writing come to life and emulate that of published works. Important to this process is providing organization and easy access to the paper and writing utensils. The use of colored paper and markers brings a fun artistic quality to the process. These items are a luxury for my children, yet they are taken for granted in other schools. I want my children to have the same experiences.

Writing brings personalization and differentiation to learning. It is used with all levels of students as the skills are ongoing. Your support in this project helps to take learned skills and apply them in higher order processes. Today's struggling writer just might be tomorrow's Pulitzer Prize Winner.
