My Students

Animation! How do you integrate technology in the urban schools? How do you get children to write? Animation can help children write and expose them to technology. Making animated cartoonIng is fun way to teach writing and technology. Students write own stories (make storyboard) and then ANIMATION!

My school, an old inner city public school build in 1917, is not a modern facility.

Our school has a majority Hispanic population. Many of my students come from Mexico and Puerto Rico, but some were born in other Latin American countries like the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Honduras. Some students were born in the US, but have parents or grandparents who immigrated form somewhere else. Most students come from families with both parents who may work some low-wage skill job.

My Project

I have been teaching animation in my art class for the last 5 years using a Sony camcorder, Mac Book and some older "E Macs". With animation, I can combine my subject fine art with creative writing and computers. I teach animation to a class by having the classroom broken into groups of 3 to 4 children, each taking turns using our computers and camera to animate. All those hands on the classroom computers have caused some minor damage to some keyboards and the mouse are not working well. We need another computer to continue the work we have done over the years. At my school we have had great success making short animated videos with 5th grade down to 2nd grade (we have made very simple videos with 1st grade and kindergarten). The last 3 years our animated films have won "Best of Show" at the student film and video festival.

The best computers for animation is any Apple product with the excellent, very basic, editing software I-Movie.

This is prefect for teaching simple film editing with children, which is why we need a MacBook the finest computer for animation. With budget cuts and less money from the state, there just isn't the funding for this kind of project. With help of the generous people of DonorsChoose, I hope to be able to continue exposing my students to this exciting project.
