Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd Grade in a poverty-stricken school district. My school district is the only one in the state to be taken over by the state due to severe financial difficulties, high administrative turnover and numerous other obstacles to learning success. Many of my students come from foster homes, single-parent families, and overcrowded, often deplorable living conditions. Some are homeless residing in local motels and shelters. My students are only six, seven and eight years old and are very excited about school and learning.

Some of my students live in conditions where the parents and caregivers are working two or more jobs and just don't have the time or funds to provide hands-on materials and a safe area for their child to learn and explore at home.

Learning is best done when it is hands-on, meaningful and relevant to the students. By providing my students with cooperative learning center tables, my students will have quiet separated areas to conduct experiments and to strengthen their skills by working with partners and exploring and using the hands-on materials at these tables. Learning Center Tables are also wonderful for students who tend to finish assignments first--now they have an area to explore and strengthen their critical thinking skills.

By providing my students with cooperative learning centers for Math and Science, Art, Literacy, and Social Studies, I can be sure that I am providing my students with a well-rounded education as we learned in the past, where today, due to extensive state testing mandates, certain subjects fall to the wayside. You also are helping promote social learning and helping students to work as a team and to come up with ideas in which they are encouraged to "think outside the box". Thank you very much for helping create more well-rounded, motivated, socially adept critical thinkers!
