Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach an inspiring group of first graders in a high-need community. These students are full of energy and love to learn.

We have just started a new word study program and the students can't wait to get started! An integral part of the program is the ability to sort words quickly and successfully into phonics categories, such as short a or long a sounds. One way to increase their speed and fluency is by doing "speed" sorts, where students time themselves with a buddy and try to beat their best time. Not only is this activity excellent for increasing their fluency, it is also incredibly motivating as students try to beat their score and have fun!

In order to provide students with the opportunity to participate in speed sorts, we will need a set of 12 stopwatches that the students can use in pairs. These stopwatches will allow the students to complete these speed sorts and, as an extra bonus, students are increasing their number sense and math skills.

I had the opportunity to borrow a few stopwatches from friends to complete this activity and the students LOVED IT! It was wonderful to see how excited they were about practicing their word study words. Learning can be so much fun, and this activity proves it! When learning is fun, the chance that students will imprint new ideas into memory greatly increases. With your help, my students can have this fun learning every day during word study.
