Entertaining, informing, and providing enjoyment for third grade readers is a challenging task that I look forward to every week. I teach a wonderful group of eight-year-olds who transition from a K-2 program where they are learning to read, to a grade 3 program in which they are reading to learn. The need for them to read fluently and to comprehend what they read is great.

Unfortunately, the community is seeped in poverty. The unemployment rate is 11.9%. The families are struggling to make ends meet. Their priorities are not always to see that their children's attendance is regular. This creates a problem within the classroom reading program. Children typically work within a chapter book at their reading level. Due to their sporadic attendance, it is difficult to help them catch up with the characters and events while staying interested in the book without holding the other readers back.

After much research, I switched to a program that uses small reading books with pictures on each page to support the text at their reading level. The program follows a structured guided reading format that can begin on Monday and end on Friday. If a child is absent, it is easy to help him or her catch up because there is less text. The students get excited each Monday when they receive their new text. They have made much progress following this format, meeting state-wide benchmarks. The problem is that I am running out of small readers and will need to move them back into chapter books. Although I submitted a request for books to my principal, my district is facing a $500,000 loss to the budget due to Maine's budget curtailment. Consequently, the budget has been frozen since early November.

Your help will ensure that my students will be able to continue reading and enjoying these small readers at their reading levels, and they will continue to look forward to a new and exciting book each week.
