I teach visual art to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at a wonderful school. It is my 2nd year teaching, and I am trying to revamp our art curriculum at this school to bring more interest to the arts for students. Our school is small considering it was originally an elementary school! We have a large special needs population at our school and all students come to art class. Fortunately, art is not offered as an elective and all students are required to take art all three years of middle school! I teach art to all 800+ students within a 12 week trimester schedule. Students come to me every third day for four weeks, giving them about 6 art classes before they rotate to another related arts class.

When planning art projects for 800+ students, it is most important to plan projects that not only meet our state curriculum requirements, but that also interest students! Having art as a requirement can be challenging for some students who often aren't interested in it, and my goal is to provide a variety of art projects that interest all students based on some things they use outside of school for their personal use. Students have recently shown an interest in digital photography as a medium for making art, and the typical "I can't draw!" students showed a lot of interest in a project that involved computers and photography.

I am asking for 3 digital cameras for an Early American/ Civil War digital photography art project. The objective for students is to take and collect images that show change between pre Civil War time and they way they see the world today. Students will be choosing a topic of interest for their photos, and when the images are saved, they will upload the photos on an editing site to crop and enhance the photos using different effects. For example, a student may be interested in shoes. They can locate and save images of pre-Civil War shoes online and take pictures of shoes they wear now. After the manipulation of their photos, they will create a series of three photos that best represent the changes from then to now. Previously, students were using burlap and yarn to stitch their Colonial America inspirations. It became the most dreaded art project. When students entered 8th grade, they often asked about it on the first day; "Do we have to make those?" I decided they need processes more interesting to their age group, especially during art history units they find a little less interesting than others.

Your help will make it possible for ALL my students to be empowered as artists. I really feel it will help those less engaged become enthusiastic about their art experience. It is crucial for art to touch the lives of middle school students because students of this age are so impressionable. I want to reach out and make art fun so that my students can continue to appreciate it for the rest of their lives.
