"Today I watched a student covertly pass a copy of Copper Sun to another student under the desk.

I smiled.

If my 8th grade students are passing books on the sly to one another, then something good is happening in reading class.

I teach in a high-need, diverse school that fully includes English Language Learners and Special Education students in the general education classroom.

We have created a climate that promotes reading at our school. There are outstanding selections for students in the library. . .if they are under the age of ten. My 8th grade students are willing to read independently, actually the majority are eager to read independently - when they've got the books they're interested in reading. (Come on. Even us avid readers prefer to read what we like to read! No one wants to spend a rainy Saturday reading Lord of The Rings - even if it has been proclaimed outstanding - if they hate fantasy!) My students will read independently. My students will become lifelong readers. . .if they have reading material they are interested in reading. My students are interested in Sharon Draper books. My one copy of each book is not getting the job done.

"Really? How long am I going to have to wait on the next one?"

"Check the waiting list."

I need to put an end to this conversation in my classroom!

I need multiple copies of Sharon Draper's books for my classroom lending library. Students enjoy reading these books independently as well as in small groups or with a partner. Enhancing my classroom library with these books will enable me to meet the reading interests and needs of my students.

You can literally get books into the hands of my students. You can help me continue to create lifelong readers. You can be the Copper Sun for my students! You can Forge their reading Fire! hide»

Jun 07 Ms. K. the Teacher

Dear Becky and Anonymous Donors,

Thank you so much for your generosity! The books will be put to excellent use for my future students. I am extremely grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to provide high-interest reading material for my 8th graders.

I truly believe that through literature we are able to better understand ourselves and the world around us. This is one of the reasons that I strive to provide material that my students can understand and relate to their lives. Thank you for helping me provide these opportunities for them.

The common thread that the majority of my former students share is reading - particularly the books they shared in 8th grade. When my former students return, the first thing they say me is, "I miss the books!" It is my great fortune to add these books to my class library. You will directly be adding to my students' book repertoire...directly adding to their knowledge!

With gratitude,
Ms. K.
