I am a prekindergarten in a public school in a city that is ranked as the most violent city in the US based on violent crimes per person. My students come from single parent, foster, shelters, or extended family households.

Many of my students do not have suitable sleeping environments. They sleep in different places, on floors or in hallways (when there is shooting around their homes). Our classroom rest time is one of the most important parts of our day. It is a quiet, safe and consistent place for them to sleep each day. And believe me, many of them can not wait to let their guard down for a while.

The mats that I am using in my classroom are three years old. Many are ripped and taped. We could only afford the cheapest mats when we bought them and they need to be replaced. They are worn out! My program has no money. We borrow from other funds just to operate. Brain research shows that students need to learn and rest so that the information is stored correctly. I know that proper rest is not achieved at home. I need to make sure it happen in my classroom. With new comfortable mats, this goal could be met.

Many of us take sleep for granted in our warm comfortable beds. Many children do not have this luxury. By helping purchase these resting mats for the classroom, you can help ensure that the sixteen students in my classroom with rest well!
