My Students

"OK everybody, get together with your groups and begin working" says the teacher. "We don't have anywhere to sit to do our work together," says a sadden student. "I know. Maybe one day we will have desks like the other classrooms where we can place them together to do our work," comments teacher.

I have a room full of precious fourth grade students who deserve the best.

Unfortunately, most of them come from an incredibly hard home life. I am at an inner city school in Alabama with all of my students on free lunch. These students strive to do their best, but with little to no help at home it is very hard for them to see having much of a future. We are, for most of them, their only hope. I am striving to give them all I can to show them that they do deserve it and they can be somebody some day. With the economy the way it is right now, we are getting no funds from the state. With the little money that our principal can get up for us we have to spend it on paper, pencils, and folders. I would love to give them more but I need your help.

My Project

At this time my students are using traditional desk for everyday learning. They are slanted, bulky, and not conducive to cooperative learning. We also only have a limited supply of these desks, so some of my students are left to have to use desks from the 1970s. In my classroom we do a lot of cooperative learning. It is the best way for all students to learn and it helps my students prepare for working in the real world some day. With these new desks, my students will be able to form their desks together to form tables of all shapes and sizes. We can use them in reading for our literacy groups. In science we can use them to work together on our science experiments. Recently we had to use the library for three days because no where in our room did we have flat long surfaces to do our work. In math we can work together in groups to help each other learn. Cooperative learning inspires some of those students who otherwise don't care. These desks will help us achieve the best learning.

These flat, top student desks will be an incredible asset to our classroom.

The students will be able to work together a lot easier. Less of my teaching time will be spent trying to get everyone situated so they have a place to work together. Cooperative learning is a life skill and should first be taught in elementary grades. These desks will give my students a chance to begin to build these skills in a more conducive environment.
