My students need a collection of 9 Science and Social Studies book sets, including Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers and an Animal Habitats Photo Book Series.
My class is made up of the most wonderful special needs students! Many of them are also military, with lots of our parents in the ARMY. My students are in grades 2 and 3, but are functioning at the kindergarten to first grade level. The majority of our school families deal with poverty as well.
My special needs students struggle to learn. Science and Social Studies are very fun for them since they love the facts! They feel very important and smart when they can retell others the real facts they have learned! The challenge is to find materials that are written at their reading levels. Having access to nonfiction books on the topics we need to cover would help them to be successful in a much more attainable way.
We need a collection of Science and Social Studies nonfiction books that are written at lower reading levels. My students are so excited to learn and would benefit from being able to independently read and comprehend the facts. It means more and they remember details when they have actually read it themselves. Currently, I have to try and modify each topic so they can understand the main ideas, and after doing so, sometimes lose part of the "meat" of the topic. These lower reading levels books are written with all the facts we need, and will help my students to learn more!
