Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach dance to grades Pre-K through 5 in a high-needs, urban school. During the school day, most of my lessons consist of a small amount of technical instruction and a large amount of creative movement. After school, however, I am able to teach classes like ballet to students who are truly interested in learning how to dance. Part of what is so wonderful about this opportunity is that it gives the students a chance to build confidence and determination while supporting the other types of learning they do during the day. They also learn how to be kind to each other and support each other's growth in ballet.

I currently have a large group of first and second graders in an after school ballet group. As much as I want to transmit my love of dance to them, it is difficult without appropriate music and instructional materials, like books, to help them understand the history and culture of ballet, as well as the effort it takes to truly be a skillful dancer. Several of my students come to class wearing socks because their parents cannot buy them ballet shoes. Their desire to learn is wonderful, and I would like to give them the best ballet classes possible.

The resources I have requested include books and Cd's that will enhance my students' learning and enjoyment of ballet. The books include nonfiction historical and cultural content, ballet vocabulary, fictional stories about ballet, and even a coloring book from which I will make copies in order to help the students learn the different movements and poses. The Cd's include a range of ballet music, including pieces created specifically for children as well as time honored classics of ballet. These materials will benefit my students by allowing them to delve deeper into the world of ballet, achieving greater understanding and enjoyment.

Your help will allow my students to experience ballet on many levels. You will not only be helping them learn to dance, but you will be helping them increase their self confidence, determination and ability to think creatively; skills that are very important for every child, especially those in a high-needs community like ours.
