Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I think back to my time as a student and it was filled with high and lows, many of which were a result of environment rather than personal choice. Though it has been years since I was in their shoes, my students still face the same challenges.
Our classroom is a place where students are encouraged to find their voices through the creation of a body of original artwork.
Many of our students aspire to attend college, but are the first in their families to try and lack many of the study, research and organizational skills necessary to succeed.
Our school is located in southwest Texas and serves a largely Hispanic community. Many are first generation American citizens and come from working-class families. Our students keep us on our toes during the school day and it is so much fun watching them develop and grow as scholars throughout the school year!
My Project
My students are eager to learn about crafting handmade ceramics pieces, but due to budget limitations we can only order a small amount of clay each year and shipping costs further reduce our budget because clay must be sent by freight due to weight limits on regular carriers.
By providing an extra ton of clay for our 80+ students, we are giving them access to twice as many opportunities to explore all facets of ceramic production.
In addition, students will be able to compare and contrast different bodies of clay than we normally have available in our studio for their use.
