My students are largely from economically disadvantaged backgrounds but are enthusiastic learners. A large percentage of them are English language learners, so developing their language skills through group critique and discussion are vital. Our school is large and makes great strides towards teaching students the skills they need to succeed in the rest of their school years and beyond. Often, our families struggle to provide basic school supplies for students, such as paper, pencils, notebooks, and art supplies. Having enough on hand for each student is a challenge. We also struggle with worn-out equipment that has been used by tens of thousands of students. With budget cutbacks, replacing things like kilns, lightboxes, and ventilation systems is nearly impossible. Our hope is that we can help students bring together their knowledge and skills in the creation of original works of art for personal portfolios.
