I teach sixth grade science in a rural school district. It is a high need community. I teach in a mixed ability setting. My hope is to inspire and motivate my students to love science as much as I do.

My students look forward to science demonstrations and experiments and use the scientific method to solve problems. I have a great love for nature and the environment and have found that my students share my enthusiasm. We have a garden space in our courtyard at school. Each year I try to have my students add something to the space. Years ago, during a unit on geometry (I was teaching math then), my students created a very large memorial sculpture in honor of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy. The sculpture serves as the focal point for the space. We hope to grow vegetables indoors during the fall and winter months in our Growlab as we explore lessons in health and nutrition, environmental studies, and biology. In late winter, we want to start seeds for the outdoor garden space. We hope to plant vegetables and flowers.

With the Growlab, we will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on science experiments. It will also allow us to grow vegetable plants to maturity. We can explore hydroponics and as an added bonus feast on the fruits of our labor.

You will make it possible for my students to engage in learning on a deep level. They will take responsibility for a living thing and come to understand the part they play in maintaining the beauty and resiliency of nature.
