Do you ever think about what you eat and how it affects your body? You probably do, but it is sometimes difficult for inner city students to make those choices. It is very hard for our students to pick the right foods depending on the environment they are growing up in. I am a special education teacher who co-teaches in a fourth grade class in an urban classroom setting. Eighty five percent of our students in our school benefit from a free breakfast and lunch program. We have been teaching our students the importance of eating healthy and how it effects your body and mind. How a healthy body leads to a healthy mind is the message we are teaching our students. Through different curriculum projects such as learning to reading nutrition labels, comparing breakfast cereals, making breakfast posters to encourage students to eat breakfast, a visit from our school nurse and a snack attack program we have immersed the students in why it is so important to think about what you eat and whether it will keep your mind active, or will it prevent you from taking charge of your learning. With this in mind I am asking for special visitors to come to our class. These visitors are the Storycrafters and they will help us to compose a song about the importance of eating healthy. The Story- crafters are composed of Barry Marshall and Jeri Burns. They have been storytellers for over twenty years, and they also have hosted radio shows, recorded music and they are writers as well. This dynamic duo will help our students creatively through books and their artistry to compose a song about the importance of eating healthy. The students will use their writing, reading, and science skills to put together the lyrics for the song. We will then teach our song to our school community of four hundred students. The Storycrafters will help us to show our students how to teach all the students in our school community the song we have put together. This song will then help to motivate our whole school to make positive eating choices. I really believe that when the students make their own song and take ownership of it, they will clearly get the message we are trying to teach them. After all, how and what you eat is a decision making process that lasts throughout your entire life. With the Storycrafters helping us to write our song and get our message out, our students will hopefully be able to choose the right foods to help them grow into healthy young adults who make positive healthy food choices throughout their lives and have a song that will remind them of what they are capable of accomplishing.
