Traveling Science Program

My students need 2 video cameras, 72 eye droppers, 36 hand magnifiers, 4 Tuff Totes, and 4 journals to record the results of the science experiment.

I teach in a multi-aged classroom with 7, 8, and 9 year old children in the state of Michigan. The school is designated a Title One school with a very diverse population. Many children enter our building not speaking English.

Children love science but score very low on science assessments. Many of our students do not have the experiences needed to understand many of the science concepts. They are very limited in the experiences they are afforded on a daily basis.

Imagine a traveling science project that will allow interaction between children and their parents. The learning that will occur will not be limited to the child alone, but will encompass the adult. All of the supplies needed will be included in the traveling kits with directions for doing the projects. The child and the adult will work together to perform the experiment. They will video tape the experience with a hand held camera. After completing the experiment they will record their findings and experience in the journal to share with the class. The class will then use the videos to set up science experiments for other children in the building. This project will benefit all involved; the parents, children, teacher and other students in the building. Each traveling science project will need a video camera, a traveling box, a journal, and basic science equipment. Just think of the fun between parent and child. More importantly, think of the learning that will happen.
