Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a high school for students who have dropped out of their regular large high schools or have come to our school for a smaller, more intimate and interesting experience. After receiving a grant from Fund to Teachers, I started teaching a class called Japan and the World.

Our students are the last students people would think would be able to read and write Japanese kanji, nevertheless be interested in such a far away culture. However, students are really interested in kanji. They are amazed when I teach them simple Japanese kanji for tree, people, etc. and often come back and say they have seen different characters on tattoos, restaurants, or in Chinatown (Japanese kanji originated from China.) They think the language is impossible but I believe if they can learn Japanese kanji they will not only learn a language credit but they will also expand their vision of what is possible for themselves.

By teaching students how to read and write kanji using the visual memory format taught by the Kanji in Mangaland series my students will not only learn about a new culture and history but they will be actively involved in going beyond their limits to learn the unexpected while having fun at the same time. In this class we explore how Japan adapted various cultures and made it their own. The Japanese were exposed to Chinese kanji and made it their own. If each student gets a copy of this book, they will be able to learn how to write kanji and be able to write inside of it to practice. I will supplement this lesson with calligraphy brush practice, examples of how kanji appear in day to day life in Japan, and a variety of other hands on activities.

Open up the whole new world of Japanese kanji for my students by allowing our class to have their own copies of Kanji in Mangaland. You will not only help students learn but also open up their vision of what is possible in their minds and lives.
