Composting with Worms in Pre-K

My students need a Worm Away composting kit, a Worm Vue Wonders kit, Inchworm Rulers and linking inchworms.

I teach 20 energetic Pre-K students in a Title I school located in a predominantly rural community. Eighty-five percent of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes and qualify for free or reduced lunches.

My students are always asking questions related to the environment when we go outside. I want to introduce them to composting to go along with our planting seeds in our school garden. I want to integrate math through measurement during this period. With no money in our budget to purchase supplies, we will not be able to purchase a Worm Away composting kit, Worm Vue Wonders, Inch Worm Rulers or linking Inch Worms.

By having a Worm Away composting kit, my students will learn how we can use scraps to feed worms who make soil which we can then use to grow seeds and plants. By using the Worm Vue Wonders the students will be able to actually see the worms who usually hide down at the bottom in the dark damp earth. By using the linking Inch Worms, my students will be able to measure objects. By using the colorful, easy to read Inch Worm Rulers, my young students will have another way to practice measuring objects and plants.

You will make it possible for my students to "do" science and math when you make a donation to this project. You will help to introduce them to the concept of recycling food scraps rather than throwing them in the landfills and garbage dumps. What a great life lesson for our future citizens!
