Hello! I teach Freshman English at an urban school in northern Indiana. This is my first year teaching and I love my job! At my school we serve a diverse student population, with over half of the students on free and reduced lunch. Despite my students’ many challenging life situations, I am inspired by their continued hunger to learn when they show up for school every day. One opportunity that my students often lack is the opportunity to work with current technology in a meaningful fashion. This is partially a function of the lack of technology in their classrooms. Specifically I’d like for my students to have the opportunity to create and present a PowerPoint presentation. Familiarity with this software will benefit my students in their post-secondary education and out into the workforce. Furthermore, I’d like to work with my students on presentation skills as a part of the project. I want them to be comfortable presenting the slides as well as creating them. I also want the ability to allow my students to create other types of media projects, such as DVD’s, to be shown in class. Given these types of technologies, my students can acquire hard technological skills while deepening their understanding of class material through meaningful projects. I am requesting a classroom DVD player, wireless mouse, a DVD, and computer cord for use by my students and myself to enhance the educational experience in my classroom. An upcoming unit in which I’d like to use this technology is “The Boy in Striped Pajamas” unit. “The Boy in Striped Pajamas” is a novel about the Holocaust which my students read for class. As we read and discuss the book in detail, I’d like to show clips from the movie. After they finish reading the book, the students each make a final project to demonstrate their learning, and to enhance their writing ability. My hope is to turn this final project into something more creative where the students use technology to present their projects to the rest of the class. They will have the option of creating a PowerPoint to present their projects, or a DVD/video production. Again, my students will have the opportunity to learn how to manipulate production software and present using current technology while synthesizing their knowledge about the novel. I think this technology will get used often and in many ways to enhance my curriculum, and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” is only one example of the ways that my students can benefit!
