Reading Across the Curriculum

My students need social studies, science, math and character building books at their reading level, and a place in which to house these books for easy access.

My students are mainly from low income households. They are just beginning to read and have varied attitudes toward the process. They also have varied skills. Having readers from different content areas will only encourage them to read more. Having the books in an area they can access themselves will only help more.

My students do not have access to books at their reading level that involve social studies, science, math and character building. They have non-fiction readers at their level, but nothing else. I utilize centers during the school day and would like to have the students focus on different content areas during their reading center. Many students do not get hooked into reading because they find the books they are able to read boring and similar.

Having a broad choice of literature is a great motivator in the reading process. These students are just beginning their foray into reading and having books from different content areas will spark their interest. I believe broadening their subject matter would reactive their enjoyment of the reading process. All these readers could be used throughout the year and touch on all the areas that our curriculum asks teachers to address.

My students are in severe need for more books at their level to draw them into reading and to keep them interested. These books would allow me to make a much broader range of books available to them. They will not only read them during their centers, but will be able to access them at all reading times by having them in a handy bookcase.
