Yacker Tracker, to Facilitate Cooperative Learning!

My students need a yacker tracker, erasable markers, and 30 composition notebooks for writing workshop!

I currently teach first grade at a high-need school in North Carolina. I have a small class size which helps me address all of the needs of my students. In first grade not only do I teach my students how to read and essential foundational skills in mathematics, but also how to be a successful student in school and life! I want them to learn about how to be in control of their learning and how to work independently as well as cooperatively in a workshop setting.

87% of my class is comprised of minority students who are receiving free and reduced lunch. Many of them do not come from English speaking homes or homes with any educational resources. In my classroom I work to provide them with a safe environment that promotes cooperative learning as well as hard work! Due to the high academic needs of many of my students it is essential for me to meet with small groups throughout the day while the other students either work independently or in cooperative groups,this time of the day is called workshop. Noise levels definitely rise in that situation as the students work together and I want them to be able to self-monitor their voice levels collectively. Giving them a sense of ownership over the sound in the classroom and the environment that their peers are learning in will be another way to teach them to value their learning and help one another.

A "yacker tracker" will provide my students with the ability to monitor their noise level without the interruption from me while I work with a small group. The "yacker tracker" is set up like a traffic light and when the light is on green the students know they are working at an appropriate noise level. If the noise level rises the color will move up to yellow and if the noise reaches an unacceptable level it has an optional buzzer that sounds when the light reaches red. The composition notebooks and erasable markers give the students the opportunity to put their writing down on paper in one place with pages that will not tear easily. The yacker tracker, composition notebooks and markers will inhance their workshop experience by giving them a sense of ownership over their learning.

It may not seem like much, but allowing the students to monitor their own learning through noise control will directly affect both their work ethic and cooperative learning skills. Their composition notebooks and markers will enable them to keep all of their writing in one place that they can share with others during workshop or at the end of the year with their parents. The notebooks allow them to see the progress they have made from their work in the beginning to the end. With your help I know my students will be able to grow as independent responsible learners while I become a facilitator to their learning through empowering them to reflect on their writing, behavior and problem solving during workshop.
